London to Falmouth is a single change at Truro. GWR trains from London Paddington take about four and a half hours to reach Truro, with 13 stops, and the branch train covers the last 20 minutes to Falmouth Town. A typical journey takes around 5h10, and with the closest connections it is just under five hours.
On the weekday we checked, the Paddington departures that reached Falmouth with one change left at 06:00, 08:03, 10:03 and 12:05, then hourly from 14:03 to 18:03. After the 18:03, the next departure we found was the overnight sleeper at 23:45.
Some of the morning gaps can be filled if you accept an extra change. The 09:03 and the 11:03 from London changed at Plymouth as well as Truro and still took about five hours, so they cost you almost nothing; the 13:03, changing at Totnes, took nearer 5h35. Routes that went out through Bristol Parkway also appeared, but at six hours or more they are far slower than the one-change trains.
The 23:45 from Paddington is GWR’s overnight sleeper to Truro, a 7h21 run with 11 stops that gets in at about 07:06. A seven-minute change puts you on the Falmouth train, and you reach Falmouth Town at about 07:33, 7h48 after leaving London. It suits anyone who wants a full evening in London and the whole of the next day in Falmouth.
The 267-minute run from Paddington and the 20-minute branch ride add up to 4h47, so a typical trip leaves you about twenty minutes at Truro and the quickest about eleven. That is not much slack at the end of four and a half hours on the main line.
The Falmouth branch helps here, because through the day it leaves Truro about every half hour, so missing your connection on a daytime arrival usually means one extra half hour on the platform. Late arrivals are less forgiving: once the 19:41 has left Truro, the branch departures we found were spaced an hour or so apart.
Driving the 295 miles via the M4, M5 and A30 takes around 5h20, so on a typical run the train is about a quarter of an hour quicker than the car as well as one change simpler than most of the alternatives above. From Falmouth Town station, allow about twelve minutes to walk the 826 metres to Church Street.
