Bristol to Falmouth by Train

By Falmouth Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

The main route from Bristol Temple Meads to Falmouth has two changes and takes about 4h25. CrossCountry runs to Totnes in an hour and 36 minutes, a GWR train carries on from Totnes to Truro in 1h47, and the branch line covers the last 20 minutes to Falmouth Town.

The faster one-change trains

Three departures from Bristol need just one change. On the weekday timetable we checked, the 06:40, the 07:38 and the 13:45 needed only the change at Truro and took just under four hours, about half an hour less than the usual route and with one change fewer. If any of those three suits your day, it is the train to take.

When the main route runs

The two-change route via Totnes ran roughly hourly from 08:45 to 18:45, mostly at 45 minutes past the hour, though around midday the times we found on it were the 11:42 and then the 14:45. In between, the 12:45 from Bristol changes at Taunton or Plymouth instead of Totnes and takes about 4h25, and the one-change 13:45 comes an hour later.

The three rides on the Totnes route add up to 3h43, so a typical journey spends a little over 40 minutes waiting across Totnes and Truro combined. Several other combinations turned up, changing at Newton Abbot, Taunton, Exeter St Davids or Plymouth before Truro, and all of them came in at between about 4h10 and 4h25, so if the clock suits one of those better there is little time lost.

Train or car

Driving the 178 miles on the M5 and A30 takes around 3h20, about an hour less than the two-change rail route and just over half an hour less than the quickest trains. By rail you finish at Falmouth Town, and Church Street is 826 metres further on foot, roughly twelve minutes.
